This is not National Bar B Q Day

Yes I say it loud and clear THIS IS NOT NATIONAL B B Q DAY or the opening of camping season!

Today is for all of us to look at all the men and women that have given up their time and lives to keep us Free and for the freedom we all enjoy. Their sacrifices of giving time away from family and friends  so all of us can BBQ or do whatever we like to do.

I thank all of them from the whole of my soul
The Coast Guard

National Guard

This is the day to remember the many fallen heroes that gave their lives for all of us, I am proud to remember them all for what they have done for all of us.

May they rest in peace and they have my thanks

Aeneas Lake 5/29

I got to the lake about 9am and the lake looked like a sheet of glass, there were some big black clouds off in the distance.
Gary showed up just as I was restring my last rod and ready for the water. It stayed pretty much calm until about noon then the wind must of changed directions 20 or more times until quarter of 2 then all hell broke loose the down pour and the north wind. lucky we were fishing the north in Bill O, Ken S, Gary and myself fishing in 30 ft of water straight down.
Fishing today was pretty slow all day but I did pick up a nice 18 in Brown about 40 ft from the pipe in 22 feet of water on a Damsel nyp. and a couple of Bows on my booby fly. 1 on a mohair leach.
wasn't spoting many fish except in 25-35 ft of water so it was Chromimides the biggest part of the day.
There were maybe 12 others on the lake and everybody was off shortly after the storm came thru.
The fishing was slow but it feel good to get out and see Bill
Bill O 92 and still going strong.

Memorial Weekend Saturday

Well I don't really plan to do much over this weekend due to so many outsiders in the area, mostly kick back and do some of the hubby things that I seem to neglect.  With Ginny my wife's back out I have a pile of extra chores to do.

Then early Saturday morning I get a text from my Buddy that has the private lake. It goes something like this:          What R U doing 2day.

Me: No real plans whats up.

Him: Have some friends in town and want to fish a few hours. very little equipment, HELP

Me: What do you need?

Him: A couple of extra rod set-up, some flies, and your knowledge, if possible sometime later today.

Me: How many Rods? Novelist or experienced? Can do both. Call me.

About 10 o'clock I get his call,

Two of them have done some fly fishing with a guide up in Alaska years ago, and the other one is 19 year old and never picked up a fly rod. and would love to learn.

Okay got it I'll put together a trolling fly box and grab a couple of rods set them up with sinking line and I'll set up a rod with some Dry line and see you about noon if that works?

Sounds great see ya then. I'll burn you a steak if you want about 3 BBQ.

I arrived at his place just before noon and went down to the launch and pulled off my Pontoon boat, got it set up and down come the him and his friends. the introductions. Chuck, Jim and Dan
.
I get out the fly box and explain whats flies to use and how, On one I tyed on a Booby fly (Disco Dolly Patton) and the other a Punkinhead. I got big laughs about the Booby fly
. "This is a joke isn't it?" Dan asked.
"Just try it half way around the lake if it doesn't work change out to something that you think will. Just make sure you let it get down and don't troll to fast."
With a big glass of Scotch in there hands the two of them Chuck and Dan get into the boats crank up the electric motor and off they go. letting out line as they get into deeper water.
While I'm setting up for the third guy (Jim) that has never had any rod in his hand we hear the shouting begin.
One of them has hooked up with a very big Bow. Up and out of the water it came and after ten minute battle Dan put it in the net. The Chuck had left his line in the water and was reeling it in and got the tug. Horsed it and it was gone, along with the fly. He tyed on another and off they went again.

While I was giving Jim a few casting lessons a quick learner, both Chuck and Dan had hooked up more than once and brought fish to the boat and net, lost a few and had finished off their drinks. and were heading back in to refresh their adult beverages.
Dan and Chuck,  headed back up to the house. Jim and I jumped into the boat. I had him let out some line as I slowed way down.
"Jim, I want you to give the line a count of ten and start to strip in about 6 inches of line slowly."
On the 5th strip he almost lost the rod and reel from a hard pull. This bow came out of the water twice before it got away. So I had him reel in and we checked out the fly and tippit and I retyed.  With a 30 foot cast and a count of ten on his third strip the smash and grab and this time he took his time and we put the net to a very nice Brookie.

We made it around the lake and the other guys were back with fresh drinks. Jim and I gave up the boat and we went back to learning to cast. Jim was doing great casting so I took off the piece of yarn and put on a large Caddis fly and had him walk over and pitch the fly in close to the weeds. It took  a few cast to get it close to where I wanted it. " Now just give it a little shake and see what happens. Keep a close look on the fly."

Bam! A Bow made a wake and took the fly off the surface Jim jerked the rod and snapped it off.
"Wow!! that was so cool!! How did you know that was going to happen ?
"I didn't know for sure but lets try it again this time if so just lift the rod firm not a jerk. "

The next few cast nothing but that all changed and Jim did awesome no jerk smooth pick up and hook set and the game begins, peeling line, taking turns up and out of the water until it made it back into the weeds. I had Jim make his way into the water knee deep and hold the rod to his left almost at water level. The guys in the boat saw what was happening and headed our way. Chuck got out and I had Jim get in, then I held the boat again and had Dan get out he held the boat while I got in with one of the ores I pushed off and away from the shore.  With me having Jim keeping the rod down low and parallel to the water we were able to get this Brut out of the weeds.  Chuck held back the "Whorays and Great Job Son" until I  dipped the net under and scooped up this monster.
It was pretty hard to get the big-ass Bow to revive I worked it a good ten minutes but he did swim away. ( I just hope he makes it.)  Jim did great.
The wind started picking up and we were call up to have a bite to eat.
Jim told his story about the big-ass Bow and the other talked about some of the fish that they landed and the ones that got away. They had to admit Jim's was the best.

Things and words got a little sloppy after another drink from the other two so after eating Jim and I went back down to the water got in the boat I had grabbed  another dry line and took us out to 20 ft of water set a front and rear anchor and rigged up to do some bobber lobbing. let Jim cast as far as he could and let the wind chop work the bobber. Soon it was bobber down and playing out another fish, after fish.  Oh Jim lost a few, snapped off as many until he learned to lift the rod smooth and steady.

My Buddy and his two friends came down and watched us for a while they were having a good time watching us the cheers from Jim's dad were awesome. I think the two of them will be doing more fishing together.
I had a really good time teaching Jim to cast, the wind was in our favor most of the day. Everybody landed some top quality fish and will be spoiled when they go off somewhere else to fish and find out that there not as big and powerful as today catch. Unless you go up to Alaska, or south to Patagonia.

Chuck and Dan both will go home with the stories of this funny looking, crazy wacky fly called a Disco Dolly Patton Booby Fly and what a hoot it was to fish. Jim told me that he was going to check out the local fly shop close to where he lived and see if they have any kind of classes so that he could learn more then what I taught him in just a short time.

Tonasket Middle School Camp and Tying Class

Yup! It’s that time of year again; the kids will be getting out of school soon moving on either the next grade or on to a new chapter in their lives.
Well hopefully a small seed was planted yesterday at the annual Tonasket Middle School end of year camp.
This makes for the fourth year that I have gone up to teach a FLY TYING CLASS with Gary. This was a small class this year, competing against archery and a hiking classes. Tough choices to make at that age. So we only had 6 signed up and one of them was sick and didn’t make it to camp at all.
So with 4 girls and 1 boy and the help of Gary and Ken Stone, we got the vices set up materials laid out and we began.
Like always we start them out with a simple introduction of the materials and tools, then onto the Parts of the hook, eye, shank, bend, gap, and barb. Getting the hook into the vice, make it twang so it’s held tight. How to get the thread started, dressing the hook, and why, picking out the tail and doing the measuring to get the length right, loose wrap, loose wrap, tight wrap tail is on top of hook. Striping clean the end of the chenille, tying it in. Picking the hackle, measuring with the gap of the hook, shiny and dull sides, striping the stem, and tying it in. Wrapping the chenille behind the hackle and why, covering the shank and tying it off. Reverse wrapping the Hackle, tying it off and how to finish it off with a whip finish tool. Hence now you have a Woolley Bugger the fly that catches all fish.
This took almost all of our hour, the kids did great as always. With lots of questions about other flies and how big of fish could they catch with what they tyed. I showed them some of my other flies. Like always they wanted to see me tye something different and how big of a fish can you catch with one of those little tiny flies.
I had showed them one of the micro midges in size 20 that I use at Rocky Ford and showed them a picture with it in it’s mouth. Almost un-believable.
Before doing the tying class Gary and I arrived early as usual and got in some fishing of course, Well after fishing here for many times and only ever catching Brookies to my surprise my 4 weight Sage all of a sudden  bent hard down and with a mighty tug. This had to be one of the biggest Brookies of my life I thought. After I got the line back on the reel and the extra 20-30 feet of backing and 10 minutes later I got my first glance at this monster a big ass broad shouldered Bow comes out of the water doing the flip flop dance and splash and off for another short run. When I finally put the net under it what a beautiful Bow it was. Strong and Powerful.
Gary had caught up to me just as I was ready to releasing it.
He had talked to a couple of guys i  a boat that told him that some triploids Bows had been planted in the last week or so, later in the day we heard that  heard that a bunch of brood stock Bows had been planted different stories.
Ken Stone joined us on the water a couple of hours later.  He did a little strippin and trolling untill the wind picked up and then headed off to the north end by the swimming dock to do some Chromimid fishin with his 2 weight.  So who really know, just that it was fun. I caught my fair share of Brookies some small and a few larger ones, but I do have to say that first Bow made my day and later catching another one was the fishing topper.

The highlight of the day was the kids always a blast.
This was the second one the first was bigger.

OCFFC first outing Aeneas Lake

Stew, Dan & Dan 1/2 the cooks
The food

The Catch up and BS section

We had a pretty fair turn out considering the weather. The out of towners Larry & his wife Judy from OR., Rich R came up from Richland, Gordon from Kennewick, Mark from the Wetside, and locals  Stewart & Peggy, Judy, Dan B, Dan K, and myself.       Mark and Gordon had fished up at Walker lake one day and hit Beaver & Beth said they caught some fish.
After a big breakfast of hash brown, eggs, sausage, beacon, blueberry flapjacks. We sat around and caught up on some of the fishing and travel stories. Watching the rain fall all around us, while staying under everybody’s RV awnings. Rich and Gordon got their rigs packed up we all said our good byes and headed out they’ll be bac next month for Chopaka, Judy and Peggy also headed bac to Omak.
The sun started to peek out about noon so a few of us headed down to the water and put in. the lite breeze blew off and on the clouds came and went only dropping a drop or two now and then. The fishing was slow but we hooked in a few fish.
I did a nice stay down Brown maybe 30 feet off shore that took a few nice runs, and it took some time to make sure it swam away after the net. But it was strong and I kept my eyes open that I wouldn’t see his come back up to the surface.  When I went pass the inlet pipe no water was coming in but later as I was working my way back out it was flowing again. The water is pretty warm at 65 and some of the Bows are starting to get the warm water sores already. If you look at them close you can see the finger prints of where people have handle them. I do my best as to just use my net keep them in the water and use my hemostats to release the hook if it doesn’t come out without the pressure.
By 3:30 I had worked my way back to the launch; Larry and Judy were coming down the hill to get his boat ready to load up so they could get on the road heading home. By the time I was packed up and back at the top of the hill Stewart and Dan B had their stuff almost read to leave. .
Mark and Gordon had fished up at Walker Lake one day and hit Beaver & Beth said they caught some fish. But that’s another story to be told later.
Another good time with good friends, some fishing and lots of BS stories.

We also have some RAFFLE TICKETS FOR SELL for some great stuff get ahold of me if you want any the drawing will be up at Chopaka next month. Some of the Items include a Pontoon boat, Very nice Wood landing net, New TFO #8 Rod, some old but like new tying books, A almost new Rio’s Windcutter #5 and afew other items. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5 , so call me and I’ll get them to you. 360-391-0242

Yes there is a Buffalo on the Resrevation

Buffalo Lake yes it's big and most differently it has some big fish.We arrived about 9 AM the wind was blowin up a gale. But by the time we were all in the water with the wind at out back it started to calm down and in no time we were all hooking into some fine Bows and not caring about the wind.

The other road one one that is not marked into Eagle Cove is deeply rutted but if you take the 2,7 mile road in slow you'll have no problem. Believe Me it's worth it. The parking is a little tight for more than six pick ups two hauling trailers.

By noon I had been snapped off twice with 4-X tippit and changed out to 3-X using my type 4 sinking line with a 10 count, anchored up in 18 feet of water, pitchin and strippin my Disco Dolly. On the third snap off I had to try something different and save my other two for later. I put on a black and wine leach flipped it out, no more than 4 or 5 cast and BAM damn near ripped the rod out of my hand. This 20 inch very fat came out of the water twice and almost jumped in to my lap as I was reaching for the net. Most fish showed them self's and were in the air at least once before being scooped up.

The smallest Bow for me today was a short but very plump 14 and the biggest had to be a hefty hearty 23-24 incher. this one had some pull power and took me into my backing, For a while I thought that I had lost it and was stuck in the weeds, until I felt a slight head shake and then it ran right at me. I had to strip in maybe 30 feet of line then it took off to the left. I got the line back on the reel and it took me a good 8-9 minutes to put the net under it.

Using a 5 weight is almost to light of a rod for most of these fish so next time and it will have to be after the BC trip in June, may have to wait till the water cools back off. Even tho its big water its now 58 and with more hot weather coming next few weeks.
I may go back this summer and take my 8 weight and tackle some of the  small & large mouth Bass that are also here. A couple of bass guys in motor boats were doing good along the weeds. I could see some big splashes as they hauled them in.

I know I had fun and by the hoots and holler from the other guys they were having a blast toooo.

During lunch everybody had the one or two that snapped them off and the one that got away story and the big fish that the net got under. and I wish we had just one more day to do it all over again.
Both Dan, and Shawn both said that they are going to come back over in the fall to tangle with them again.
By 3 I had had my fill of fighting off the pesky Natts that swarmed us all day up the nose, down the throat,.in the eyes, behind the glasses and the buzzing in the ears.

McGinnis Lake on the Colville Reservation

From left to right.
Richard B, Andy, Brian, Troy, Dan, Brian, Rob, Shawn, Jeff just stepped out

The plan was to head out to Rebecca Lake on the Res, but the guys got a little side tracked and we ended up fishing McGinnis instead, The wind was blowin out of the south so we only fished for 3 hours with the lake being real deep and not everybody having fast sinking line they became discouraged pretty quick. So with only a few fish caught by the few with deep sink line. the wind, and noway as good as the day before them fishing Buffalo Lake they wanted to head back to Omak and hit Big Green again.

When we got back to Green there was no wind to speak of the water crystal clear. Did a little BBQ and into the water. I worked the edges and pick upped three nice 14 inchers on a dry adult Damsel. then switch to my intermittent line with a Punkinhead and finished out my day with and another 6 pack of 14 inchers.

Lots of cookie cutter  Bows that like to play doesn't really matter where you chuck your line and what you have on it they will come out and play. the water is getting warm so it may not last to long before we need to give them a break.

Sinlahekin Big Blue

The boyz from the Wetside are over and more showed up Troy flew up from AZ. And Brian pick him up at Seatac  before coming over, Rob showed up while we were in the water and he brought a friend.  And come Friday there will be 2 more to show. Dan’s dad Richard turned 71 and he and Dan have been doing the Father/Son thing every may with out missing on 31 years. This makes the 20 year for me.
9 AM air temp. 58  3:30 air temp. 78  A south wind blew between 8 and 12 MPH all day long with gust I’d say to 15.                                     Many times it looked as if we would get rain, but never did.
I wasn’t more than 20 feet from the boat launch when I got my first strike, using my clear intermittent line with a red eyed Damsel Nymph. With cheers from boyz still on shore I brought the first fish to the net.  Fishing the south end to keep the wind to my back, I ventured into the very south end of the lake looking for a place to get out of the wind. Going thru the shallow narrows I pick up a 16 inch Bow and pick up 4 more working my way around the outer edges but all were small in the 12-14 range. The wind wasn’t quite as bad but I wanted to fish with the others. So I headed back out everybody was picking up fish here and there mostly in 12 to 14 feet of water. But the casting was tuff with lots of wind knots. I finally dropped anchor just about 30 ft from the west shore and 50 yards south of where we all launched pulled out my bobber lobber tied on a  SZ 16 Snowcone and gave it a fling with the wind chop it didn’t take long before bobber down. And for the next hour It was the same just about every cast I had a fish I’de say the biggest was a 18 the smallest being a 12. But to my surprise I did get 1 very not real long but very fat Brown.
Most everybody headed to shore close to noon, when Rob and his Buddy Brian showed up and to have some BBQed lunch. By 1:30 most of us were back in the water with very few fish being caught and the wind speed picking up stronger. I was back out and packing up my stuff at 3. After lunch I only put 2 Bows in the net and lost 1.
So all in all I put some nice fish in the net lost a few,  did the best on the Snowcone just off shore in 9 ft. of water so I’d say I had a pretty good day.

Brian and Troy the other Brian and Rob were going to head back to Green Lake to fish again, Troy told me he and Brian had caught twice as many fish in the couple of hours the day before than the two of them caught all day here fighting the wind.

It's 5:30 and looking at my weather station  the wind is blowing at 9.6 MPH and It's kinda being block from the big hill behind the house. Weather Bug says it 14 MPH at the airport. Wonder where we're going to fish today.???????????????????????????????

Winthrop Big Twin and even bigger wind

Yesterday on my way up to meet with Gary I got the call from Shawn the he and the boyz of the wetside were in Start Up and heaed this way for the fun and fishing and that they will be in Twisp. The plan was to fish Davis yesterday, Big Twin today and that they would be on the water by 10AM.
I left here at home at ten to 9 and made my way over the Loop. they had arrived not more then five minutes before me and the wind was blowing at a steady stand out straight flag blowin gale.

Jeff was out in the water on the far side (east) in his small boat, Duke was off walking the shoreline of little twin. Shawn and Dan were unloading their pontoon boat drinkin down the sudds already, while Richard, Dan's dad was sitting in his truck. I parked next to Richard and he and I walked down and talked to Dan and Shawn.  While we were talking Dan put a 6 pk on the tool box of the trailer and the wind blew it off and when it hit the ground it blew two cans open spraying sudds all over both Shawn and Dan.

Shawn was telling me that the rest of the party boyz would be joining us in Omak on Tues. Andy, Brian, Rod, and a couple of others, This will be the 20th year  for me to be fishing with this group every May and always Mother day weekend either to start or end depends on the weather.

Richard and I decided to go get a cup of coffee and hope the wind would die down because neither of us wanted to fight it fishing if suppost to be fun and that wind didn't look a bit fun. After getting coffee we sat in my truck and watched the three of them fight the wind. About 11 we see Jeff headed for shore enough was enough and he was out of there. Duke took off while we were gone for coffee he had enough too. Rich and I caught up on good old times and I headed home at 12:30 .

Lost Lake and lots of Brookies

The wind was blowin in our valley again today. So after hearing some reports form some pretty reliable anglers one being our friend Bill O. that the Brooks were bigger than normal compared to the last few years with him catching many over 16 inches. On his white head all peacock chromimide Gary and I just had to go up and see for yourselfs.  Thinkin that the weather and wind would be about the same up there as it was in Tonasket, we used Gary's 12 ft boat with the electric motor to troll around. It was real nice, very little wind sky bright blue and down right warm. Before leaving Gary's house he talked me into bringing my Rain jacket and a sweat shirt. Never used either of them.

This was the first time that I had ever been up there on a weekend. went we arrived at 9:30 and got the boat into the water there were two other boats out. and by the time we were in the water another guy was pulling in to unload his boat. By noon there were at least 6 and more were coming.

The pair of loons sang to us all day what a great sound it was. Gary tied on this strange deer-hair fly on his deep 6 line and within minutes he had his first fish solid fat Brook. It was a while for me to get hooked up too a fish that I brought to the net while Gary was at 4 maybe number 5 fish and he had one on the stringer for dinner. He may have caught more at the beginning but my one fish was bigger and I put that one on the stringer. By the end of the day Gary had caught more fish then I, I admit but it wasn't that many. we both threw back a lot more then we're taking home.

We both caught some big fish and lots of smaller one in the 10 to 14 inch range it was 3:30 when we headed in with a full limit for both of us. I don't keep many fish for me to eat but the two that I had tonite sure tasted good rolled in corn meal. But one of the damnest things of the day was when we got back to the launch a Garder Snake of maybe the diameter of my thumb and a little over 2 ft. long was in the water doing his best to pull one of the fish on the stringer closer to shore I was able to go get my phone and video it so that I could show my wife. I just tried to download from my phone but I guess it's to big to send.

The water temp is already up for this highlands lake at 61 degrees the sun was warm the sky clear and blue and very little wind today Gary and I had another good time on the water laughing at each other, swapping stories and sitting in the same boat and you know after all day in such a small space together we are still friends. Thanks Buddy for a fun day but next time I'm bringing my pontoon so I don't have to wait for you to mess with you line around you shoe laces.

Also Scott showed up giving that new Buck's Bag South Fork a work out and tune up. Way to go Scott get use to it before we get to BC next month.

Crawdads and big fish

I was windy again this morning so I sat at the bench. tying up some new crawdads to run over to my friends private lake to try.
#6  Crawdad
this is a small Brown of maybe 5lbs
With just tow tyed up as test models I headed over to the lake to give them a fling. The first one was snapped off because I only had on 4x tippit I went down to a 2X and landed 1 nice Brook, two Tigers, two Browns, and two bodasish Bows the action was slow at first but when I found the right speed it was like being behine the wheel of a NASA  launch pad hard and fast. one of the Bows came out of the water no less than 3 ft and more than once. I'll be tying more.

Back to Aeneas Lake

Yesterday Sat. Gary only had until 1 o'clock to fish with stuff to do and I needed to finish getting some more flies tyed to finish up some orders.  So I headed up to Aeneas the wind was blowin just at 6 MPH. I knew that it was going to blow up there but had to go.
When I arrived Gary was in the water the wind was blowin out of the north at maybe 6-7 MPH it didn't take me that long to be on the water the wind calmed down just a little. Taking to the ores right away and working my way to the frist bay on the southeast I got my first strike but lost it going for my rod.
Taking a quick break from the ores I dropped anchor retied and pitched out again and went back to the ores. getting pass the water pipe I got another tug the tip hit the water I went for the rod the fish were liking the DDP (Disco Dolly Parton). My boobie fly. I stayed on the ores untill I reach the northeast bay dropped anchor in 6 feet of water changed rods to my bobber lobber Chromimide rig and set the indicator, just let the wind wake the indicator on a 40 ft cast.

Three cast later nothing yet. Change to a micro mini leach 3 cast nothing. retyed on another DDP to my sinking line while waiting for bobber down. NOTHING reeled in and changed rods again with my back to the wind I worked my way across the north end of the lake and found fish in 12 ft of water suspended in 7. Kicking, long cast and stripping I picked up my first Bow to the net. Gary and I side by side both catching a fish or two.
The wind pick up even more so we headed back to the shallows to anchor up and take a rest.
A few cast wind knots and stronger wind time to bail. Changed rods again pulled anchor and let the wind blow me back to the launch. And it didn't take long.  Hooked a couple on the way back nothing huge but I did see on the Fishing Buddy some in 30 ft of water at the bottom dropped anchor and took off the DDP and put on a Chromie got my depth made my cast and sat there for a few.

O take no hookset Gary went to shore to and was done fighting the wind . A white cap hit me in the back and I was done too by the time I got my anchor pulled up from the 30 ft of water I was right next to shore and had to use the ores to pull away and move down to the launch.

Gary was just about packed up and was talking to someone when I hit the pullout. High Noon the last one on the churning it was like a washing machine looking back over the water. I caught some fish.

Spent the rest of the day tying flies
